We use this tool to analyze network traffic flow. This tool provides visibility into application traffic and allows us to see it in real-time and historically to provide real insight into what is actually occurring if we are experiencing difficulties with our applications. The tool can analyze many different network protocols as/vendors. It is good at tracking SNMP, packet data, etc.
  • Providing insight into flow based technology
  • Provides insight into problems with packet based technology
  • Can really help with an abnormal data flow mapping
  • Wirks well with other Orion products
  • Cloud monitoring is lacking
  • Better reporting and filtering capabilities
  • Stronger integrations with other 3rd party products
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer flow alerts to monitor all traffic on the network and we have numerous alerts set up to detect high traffic utilization. The alerts are easy to set up and customized to alert different groups to different concerning situations, like high traffic, jitter, and packet loss on our VoIP network. This was especially helpful when we were asked to roll out web conferencing tools to all employees. The tool is helpful for both virtualized and physical server environments.

We use it to monitor what applications are flowing across our router and firewall interfaces and to track traffic volumes.
  • Good graphics
  • Easy to implement
  • Easy for non-technical staff to view
  • NTA has a requirement that it run on the same server [as] Orion. This prevents us from scaling horizontally and to not have all SolarWinds services running on the same server.
  • Interface utilization information is difficult to determine
NTA is used to monitor critical transit points in our network to see application mix.

We initially bought it for Netflow data from our firewall and some internal systems. Currently, we don't use it as we have migrated to Palo Alto Firewalls, which provide much better data and have rendered [SolarWinds] NTA mostly obsolete in our environment. On occasion, we'll use [SolarWinds] NTA to monitor internal traffic to a system, but it's rare.
  • Displaying traffic usage data
  • Internet bandwidth utilization reports
  • Better integration with Palo Alto
  • Better UI for displaying data
[SolarWinds] NTA works if you don't have any other tools, but other tools provide better visibility and are easier to read.

We use SolarWinds Netflow to monitor network performance and traffic. The IT department controls the product and monitors the entire infrastructure with it. We primarily use it to monitor link usage and to keep an eye on bandwidth issues etc. It allows us to alert on when a link is being over utilised or we see any problems occuring.
  • Easy to configure and roll out.
  • Great history available, I can see detailed history on a link which helps with troubleshooting.
  • Graphs available are great, excellent for management.
  • SolarWinds as a whole is extremely resource hungry.
  • General user interface issues, some things are not intuitive.
  • Price is fairly high.
SolarWinds is great for large environments where you need detailed information as to what is flowing through your network, so if you require a deep dive into your network traffic and estate I would definitely recommend it. In situations where there is the time to put into another but perhaps more complex to configure product I would recommend that.

We use this product to monitor our bandwidth and packet traffic. It also allows us to see what devices access our other devices in our network and websites visited. I use a monitor to see traffic flow so that I can be prepared for any problems that might arise and respond in a timely manner. Being proactive is always better than being reactive.
The ability to watch my network flow and our devices with high bandwidth allow me to mitigate any issues that might arise. Often times I am able to resolve a problem before my departments and end users even knew there was a problem.

The instance I use [of SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA)] is used by our department only. There are other installations across the organization. When we have network issues at a site, it helps determine what the issue is ( bandwidth flooding, undesirable traffic, improper traffic, etc) and helps identify what devices are the bad actors. We can see conversations per device and the utilization for each conversation. Protocols are also identified.
[SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA)] does well for bandwidth utilization tracking from endpoint to endpoint, as well as what protocols are being utilized in the conversations. However, if you need a deeper dive, a product like Wireshark would need to be utilized. I have not seen the capability to store individual conversations and analyze them.

Across the entire organization. Really helps troubleshooting bandwidth related issues and helps us keep an eye on if it's legitimate traffic and if we really need to upgrade our MPLS links.
If you already have other SolarWinds modules then it fits in nicely and gives a better consolidated view.

SolarWinds NTA has helped tremendously. As we are in the healthcare industry, all of our hardware, software, and others are very important to run with a very limited amount of disruptions. When things go wrong our teams need to see why, when, and how to improve so it does not happen next time. This is where SolarWinds NTA comes in.
  • Monitor interface's network bandwith
  • Traffic patterns
  • Enhance bandwidth before outages occur
  • Bring down the price
  • Tighten up CBQoS
  • Enable Linux equipment
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer is best suited for a company that is very dependent on fewer outages because it costs them a lot while an outage happens. It would not be the best for a small company that doesn't handle high bandwidth needs.

We use it to extract flows from all of our routers and analyze traffic.
  • Integrates well with Network Performance Monitor (NPM) and other SolarWinds tools
  • Combines multiple data streams into a single user-friendly graph format.
  • Provides complete visibility into the network traffic flows.
  • Requires a good amount of DB resources in order to function smoothly.
  • Web interface needs to be refreshed to include more interactive charts and graphs.
  • Lack of troubleshooting methods
Solarwinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer is well suited in a small, medium, or large network environments. It is capable of monitoring multiple flow data types such as Netflow, Sflow, JFlow, NetStream, or IPFIX. It is a very powerful tool, which helped my organization to track down and troubleshoot a number of issues.

It is used by a Department - Network Monitoring Team.
One of the important use case is it helps us to identify any outage in network, real-time and team responds immediately.
This reduces the business impact, we being a customer service entity.
  • It gives bandwidth information on interfaces basis.
  • Helps in identifying any system if infected and team can isolate that endpoint.
  • Denial-of-service can be identified and stopped. One of the key aspects again.
  • Reporting and integrating with other tools like NAC solution.
  • Can adapt ML/AI going forward.
  • Auditing can be improved and self analysis within tool itself.
SolarWinds can be well suited for industry that caters to customers across the globe and has lots of data to deal with from different customers.
This would help to monitor and prioritize the data to be picked, flag the service provider and reduce the impact on customer. Best suited for service provider who cater to financial sector as they are time bound revert expected and business is highly volatile.
This would not serve the purposes of a small organization where manual resources can handle the load and troubleshoot easily alone.

We searched for a Netflow analyzer to help operations to understand how data are going through network.
As we already use SolarEWnds (NPM, NCM, ...), NTA was a logical solution as it reuses all polled devices.
  • Good integration with other SolarWinds modules (NPM, NCM, IPAM, etc.).
  • Easy to install and use.
  • Auto discover of interfaces.
  • Troubleshooting is not easy in cases of NTA problems.
  • Static interface.
  • Not easy to cross data between nodes.
It's the natural solution if you already have SolarWinds modules as it's requiring NPM.
Even if it's not really user-friendly you can add alerts for traffic, QoS support must be increased to be useful.

Easy to use for network diagnostic or traffic knowledge even without a real-time console.

SolarWinds Network Bandwidth Analyzer is used by the internal Infrastructure department as our go-to tool for analyzing, tracing, and documenting the network infrastructure. This is also the application we utilize to gather all necessary information and metrics needed to diagram the network infrastructure. This is a piece of software that is utilized on a daily basis for troubleshooting and to ensure adherence to regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Monitoring & Alerting
  • Documentation
  • Visualization of traffic and executive level reporting
  • Would like to see additional enhancement to the web interface
SolarWinds Network Bandwidth Analyzer would be very well suited for users from the network administration through middle management, up to VP-level users, who are responsible for network and infrastructure operations within the company. SolarWinds Network Bandwidth Analyzer is used as an initial troubleshooting point for the network admin team, as well as M&A for all levels. Middle and VP-level users would benefit from, not only M&A, but the graphical reporting features often requested by upper management.

We have been using SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer for quite some time at our organization for monitoring bandwidth and traffic patterns.
We use it organization-wide to monitor users or applications with high bandwidth utilization. These helps us to maximize the up-time of our network and applications leading to smooth and fast access to the internet and data center applications.

Our overall experience with this tool is very positive and has helped us a lot in keeping our infrastructure lag free.
  • Monitoring Network Bandwidth is the best feature we see in this tool as its detailed insights help us in allocating bandwidth to users correctly.
  • It can be deployed very easily, efficiently and quickly. We deployed it in a few hours at our organization.
  • It is good at finding Hosts or IP addresses that communicate more or frequently in the network.
  • The dashboard is a little complex for a layman to understand. I remember when I was new to this product I had a difficult time in understanding the traffic patterns.
  • Technical Support Assistance is quite complex and difficult to obtain and it has a lot of room for improvement.
  • Training material is not easy to find. More training videos would be appreciated.
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer is well suited in use cases like:

  1. Bandwidth Monitoring for Internet, MPLS & Point to Point Links.
  2. Realtime performance analysis for networking equipment like switches, routers, firewalls, virtual machines, etc where we can monitor performance of components like CPU, RAM, Storage, etc.
  3. Identifying varied traffic patterns and top talkers in an environment with ease and good accuracy.

It is being used across all our sites to monitor our bandwidth usage.
  • User-friendly dashboard.
  • Metered at a glance statistics.
  • Phone app integration.
  • AD integration for 801.x port utilization.
The product is well suited for multi-site star topology networks where bandwidth is shared. At a single site, it would be less appropriate as you wouldn't need as many resources to monitor your network.

It's primarily used by myself, and occasionally I will provide network analysis to others on their request. It can provide data on how our current data links are used wherever it has been set up correctly.
  • It can provide details on a particular link in terms of network utilization and traffic flow.
  • SolarWinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer can be difficult to set up and requires correct settings on router interfaces at egress points.
  • It works with most Cisco devices, but I have had difficulty setting it up on other vendor's equipment, e.g., Fortinet
It should be deployed at network ingress/egress points where network traffic flow information is desired to be gathered — best used on routers. I don't typically use it on switches.

Network Traffic Analyzer has been a valuable tool for us in analyzing network traffic. It was easy to implement and customize to our needs. It provides insights from multiple vendors reporting flows through their nodes.
  • Flow information. It knows where your devices' traffic is.
  • Create reports.
  • Manage devices with an easy way to see the flow.
  • They need to improve how to handle Layer 2 flow.
  • There are user interface issues.

We use Solarwinds for real time monitoring of network devices and servers at multiple locations. Solarwinds can be one of the best monitoring solutions around, though it is very modular so it can be pricey to get all the features.
  • Real time
  • Alerts
  • All-in-one solution
  • More Features
  • Price
  • Initial setup can be overwhelming
The ability to have config backups and use those backups for config checks. We have port-security on a set of switch ports and we can check every night that those ports still have it configured. As well when no security policies are put in place we can check all routers for the new config and make sure it is there. SolarWinds tends to be slow and unwieldy. Maintaining nodes to make sure that everything is monitored tends to be labor intensive. The UI needs a major overhaul.

Even in the age of seemingly limitless bandwidth, someone will always ask "Who is using all bandwidth?!?" Whether it is the sys admins downloading a new ISO image or the folks in shipping streaming Netflix in 4K (again!), finding out where your bandwidth is being allocated is more than just looking at interface utilization.

Primarily used by our network management team, NTA gave valuable insights into the profile of our data. We would often use the tool to help isolate traffic patterns between our data centers and critical facilities. Even when "just" watching our primary interface performance, we often found actionable intel that empowered business decisions.
  • Visibility into the profile of your network traffic, not just the volume of traffic.
  • Supports sFlow, jFlow, Netflow support
  • IPV6 support
  • Leverage Palo Alto visibility in NTA
  • The UI can be a bit clunky -- but that's compared to the other products in the Orion suite. Most vendor tools are atrocious!
  • NTA data is a beast. Not running SQL 2016 with support for in-memory OLTP? You can't use the latest version (4.6)
  • If you are running an environment of any size, you will need separate instances of SQL *or* a hefty server to support a shared SQL instance
Building visibility into your network environment is key. Have Juniper, Cisco, or Huawei NetStream devices? Need to support a variety of flow protocols? What about Netflow v5 and v9? Network team harassing you about NBAR2 because "We encrypt our traffic!" or "We use non-standard ports for our applications!!" (silly security engineers)? Then NTA is the product for you.

Honestly, if you need to pull back the curtain on network performance, putting NPM and NTA together is a beautiful and effective combination.

Network Bandwidth Analyzer is our "go-to" tool for basic performance and availability monitoring of our network. It provides us with the ability to quickly and easily see the current status of our network and systems environment, while also making it easy to personalize the presentation of the information so it is accessible and actionable for our different teams. Some of the newer features in NPM and NTA have made Network Bandwidth Analyzer even better in root cause analysis procedures.
  • The level of customization possible with Network Bandwidth Analyzer is very valuable. Rather than being stuck with a "one-size-fits-all" presentation, an administrator can easily create customized views, reports, and alerts so that users can have a more tailored view of the data provided by Network Bandwidth Analyzer. This has the effect of making the tool more attractive to the end user.
  • The NetFlow Traffic Analyzer piece of Network Bandwidth Analyzer provides the details on bandwidth usage on the network. More than knowing how much bandwidth is being used, one is provided with detailed information on how that bandwidth is being used. This provides invaluable information for capacity planning and even certain forensic tasks faced by the network engineer.
  • The ability to produce network maps provides an easy way to create an attractive and functional NOC/SOC view of the entire network. Both technician and the occasional passerby can quickly determine if there are issues to be addressed. The ability to customize a map with background images and custom icons and stencils can make these maps really pop.
  • Network Bandwidth Analyzer needs to provide even more capabilities to restrict individual users in terms of their ability to edit or create web views. Currently, it is an all-or-nothing proposition, which means that any user can change any view rather than being restricted to changing only designated views.
  • Continued improvements in the ability to manage the custom fields used in Network Bandwidth Analyzer is needed. Custom properties are a critical feature in terms of customization of any SolarWinds Orion application, but there is still too much manual intervention and updating required in their management.
  • SolarWinds needs to work on the addition of in-context help in processing the information presented by Network Bandwidth Analyzer. Not all end users are seasoned engineers or systems administrators, so any tools that might tell the user what a "next step" might be when presented with particular types of data or events would be invaluable. SolarWinds has experimented with similar functionality in the past.
Network Bandwidth Analyzer is best as a basic "up/down" tool. It is very good at telling a user the basics that are most often of interest. Information such as availability, CPU and memory usage, bandwidth utilization, response time and hardware health data are available out-of-the-box for a very large vendor list. Also, the dashboards are already configured to show this information.

It is the application that we use to monitor the network traffic in the company, the possible collisions, falls and delays that may occur as well as we use it, in the same way, to define how the bandwidth consumption is being managed and thus be able to determine who wastes the internet service causing delays in the network. Likewise, it allows us to have specific statistics regarding the type of specific data that are most consumed in the network.
  • The details of the traffic are especially good if it shows statistics in real time. It is very important to analyze it at the same time
  • It lets you know who is watching within the network so it is ideal for a thorough monitoring of resources
  • It has an intuitive interface of easy operation that allows the operation of the same without problems
  • Shows only the information of monitored nodes, if there is any node that presents some suspicious activity but is not being monitored it is ignored
  • The licensing of the complements by SolarWinds is done separately so the final result ends up being really expensive for the end user
  • Although the use is very intuitive the configuration is not so and until you have done it in a repetitive way it is a slow and cumbersome process
SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer is recommended in projects or companies of medium to large scale, which has a specialized support staff and advanced knowledge. It is less recommended in small companies that do not require detailed monitoring of bandwidth consumption, in view of those needs. it is preferable to look for less specific options.

SolarWinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) allows us to get an in-depth view into the traffic traversing our network in a central easy to navigate interface. By integrating into our existing SolarWinds Orion environment, we were able to use NTA very quickly without any extensive setup or configuration. NTA allows us to quickly identify how bandwidth is being used at our branch office locations to quickly resolve bandwidth oversaturation or security incidents.
  • Easy to use and customizable interface.
  • Intuitive conversational search.
  • Integrates well with other SolarWinds products in the Orion suite.
  • Using it without having at least SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) can be a pain.
  • There is an initial learning curve to be able to fully use the product.
  • The product is very resource intensive in larger environments.
NTA is a great solution for monitoring Netflow traffic and presenting it in an easily readable way. The seamless integration into a new or existing SolarWinds Orion instance is where the product really excels allowing you to have a single pane of glass for your entire network. Smaller companies may find NTA to be expensive and a bit of overkill for their needs.

We use SolarWinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer to monitor the sites in our WAN. We are able to see how much bandwidth is being consumed, who is using the most, and where the traffic is going to or coming from.
  • Easily spot when nodes are down.
  • Helps you qos traffic to priority sites.
  • Show you how much bandwidth sites and apps are using.
  • Building custom reports isn't that easy.
  • Database maintenance doesn't always run and will fill the database.
  • Real time traffic reports aren't always available.
I find the SolarWinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer would be well suited for businesses small and large. It might not be appropriate for businesses with very few employees that do little networking.
